Magazine Advert For Nemisis

Add caption

We created a magazine advert for our band Nemesis, we used photoshop to add text, and adjust the image to how we wanted it, and tried to show our genre through the use of photoshop, with font, colour, composition etc. Our chosen genre was Electronic.

VMA's Evaluation

Rise Against – Make It Stop (September’s Children)

Our chosen winners for the “Best video with a Message” category.

The music video features occasional clips of the band performing in a school hall, this fits the characteristics of the genre as Rise Against are an alternative rock band which are liked a lot by rebellious teenagers because of their political and emotional messages.
The lyrical to visual representation in the music video is very limited, but there are a few parts of the video which give the hint of the relationship between visuals and lyrics, the main example being when the lead singer names of young sufferers of depression/discrimination who committed suicide. Their names come up in text on the screen.

Goodwin's theory

Goodwin’s theory

ANALYSING WILLS FIRST VIDEO _ HOLIDAY

Music and visuals: We think that the music links well with the visuals because the songs pace is fast and the transitions used are cut quickly and also the change of location, and camera shots/angles.
Genre characteristics: The song comes under the genre of hip hop and the costume used fit well with the genre and in hip hop music videos stereotypically has ‘polo shirts, baggy jeans, ‘bling’ hats/caps’ which they have used in their music video to conform to those characteristics.
Voyeurism: There wasn’t any voyeurism used due to the fact the artist ‘will’ big man ting was looking straight at the camera. Which is another one of GOODWINS points Close up of the artist.
Intertextuality: There wasn’t much intertextuality used. It was mainly close ups or medium shots to show the location.
Visuals and lyrics: The lines in the song are as if dizzee rascal was talking to someone (a woman) and as he is talking to the camera it’s trying to show as if the camera is that woman. The different colours used as effects also links well because it is a summer song and everyone likes bright colours in the summer.

Demands of the record label:

The camera is focused on the artist throughout the video to ‘promote’ the artist as a brand to make him well known.

What worked well? The links between music and visuals, and lyrics in visuals, the lip syncing was good, and the timing worked well.

VMA's Rock Video Evaluation

We were told to look through the VMA rock video nominees and then decide which one we thought won and explain why....

Evaluation
We think that the Foo Fighters video was the best out of the lot and deserved to win in the end.  We thought that the lyrics and the name of the song linked well with the actual visuals of the video. A good example was when he got out of his car to walk everywhere linking with the name of the song, Walk. There was a link with genre characteristics when we saw the entire band playing the instruments, which is what you tend to see in a lot of films based around rock films.  The video relates to all of the micro elements, mainly mis-en-scene because it conforms to the codes and conventions of ‘rock’ music videos, it uses the lighting and costume to show the genre throughout by having the band members in dark clothing, and using props like guitars, drum kits and amplifiers to emphasise the conventions of a rock video. Also during the video the lead singer is the main character of the narrative and meets each member of the band throughout the video narrative.  Sound is one of the most important elements when it comes to the music video, some rock music videos use fast paced editing and some use slow, however we thought that the overall pace was in the middle, and both fast and slow paced editing was used, but it was all synchronised together to make it look more realistic. The camera shots used were low angle on the main character to signify his importance of the band, being the lead singer. There were a lot of mid shots and long shots of him when he meets the other band members in the different locations. The camera also pans around the band when they are performing which is another common convention in every rock video or film.

VMA Music Video Awards - Katy B

Katy B
Dark coloured clothes and leather represents her to be quite rebellious. From this promotional photo she comes across as an R&B artist. Her clothing style is quite individual which is symbolic of her music style. Her natural look could help her to appeal to a young audience. The general colours used in the image are quite plain and neutural and this could suggest that she is an artist that could appeal to wide range of audiences.
The music video definitely demonstrates genre characteristics due to the location being a gig venue/club and props like dj decks etc used and the artist seen interacting with these things.
With the relationship between lyrics and visuals you could argue that there is and isn’t a relationship. It could be suggested that there is due to the lyrics describing an energetic club atmosphere and the visuals showing a venue and crowds of people. On the other hand you could argue that the lyrics and visuals don’t relate due to the artist relating to herself in the lyrics whereas in the visuals she is the one performing the song, and not experiencing the energetic atmosphere of the club as much as those in the crowd. There are close ups of the artist singing, and also long shots of her performing on stage, her performing recurs across her other work.

Rinse presented Katy B's first single, "Katy On a Mission", which was produced by Benga and was released on 22 August 2010.[17][18] The single reached number 5 on the UK Singles Chart and number 1 on the UK Indie Chart. She is a dubstep, R&B, funky, house and UK garage singer Katy B performed at the London Jazz Festival in 2009 with Ms Dynamite,[19] who also featured on Katy's second single, "Lights On" which was released in the UK on 19 December 2010, where it debuted at number 4 on the UK Singles Chart.
Her third single "Broken Record" was released in March 2011, and peaked at number 8 in the UK.
Her fourth single "Easy Please Me" was released on 3 June 2011.
Her fifth single "Witches' Brew" was released on 28 August 2011.
Katy's debut album On a Mission was released on 4 April 2011, and peaked at number 2 on the UK Albums Chart.

PREPERATION TASK

We decided to do a solo artist as our magazine advert, and our chosen genre is pop. We looked at artists such as Rihanna, Katy Perry, Jason Derulo, Jessie J, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, all BIG pop icons, but all share the same thing in common when it comes to album covers/posters/advertisement etc.

They all use close ups of the artists faces or try to do shoulders up shots, they use heavy makeup, emphasizing lips and eyes for example Jessie J is known for having diamantes on her lips but this has also been done by Rihanna, Pixie Lott, and other famous pop artists, so we have taken this idea and are going to include this in our magazine advert. Most of the albumn covers or other advertisements we have looked at have not had much background most of the colour has been on the face, or used with makeup or jewellery, and majority of the time the costume/outfit is not shown, so our main focus in our magazine advert will be makeup. For our location we will use the photography studios so we can have a clean white background and use appropriate lighting when needed, and we will use things like bright coloured necklaces, bracelets, earring and rings, as well as eye shadow lipstick and hair to make the statement of POP. We also looked at fonts that have been used on the posters and albumn covers and most of them are bold, and stood out from the rest of the image, they have backgrounds or light around them to emphasise who the artist is and their name. Sometimes they include the name of the song underneath but in a slightly smaller font, so looking at these it will be the same in our magazine advert. The overall colour scheme of our magazine advert will be bright complimentary colours, as well as contrasting colours, like pinks, oranges, yellows, greens, and blues. When taking our photos we will think about the composition, like having the artist in the middle of the shot, looking at the camera, or looking away, using their hands on their face to see jewellery and nails etc.

Mood Board for POP genre.

PREPERATION TASK

We created a mood board of different pop images we could find, we used things like artist/group album covers, and focused on the main things included in them like jewelry, hair, costume, colour, font, lighting etc.

Re-Pitch

Music video idea for Future in You

For our music video we decided to start with a man in a bar, who then see's a girl walk in giving him a flirtatious look. He then goes into a fantasy and the lyrics start, where hes dreaming about them having a future, theres various different shots, and they are all in colour where as the start was  in black and white. Towards the end of the song, the man snaps out of his dream and the shot is back in the bar where the girl then walks straight past him and into the arms of another man.

Response to Pitch Feedback

Positive Feedback:

Negative Feedback: We realised from the feedback that we will need to add a bit more detail in what we plan to do and think of more locations, and do more research in where we can go (health and safety). we also need to look into the genre so we can establish a target audience, and we need to think more about costume and relate more to goodwins theory.

Pitch for Song Chosen

Our chosen song of preference was Ne-yo - Future in You.

Music promo video
For our music promo video, we are looking to base our video on Ne-yo's other videos, the way we will do this is by getting our main actor to wear smart clothing including a trilby hat and other smart accessories. On terms of location, we are looking to film the video in a restuarant-looking place or even better an actual restaurant, for other parts of the video clip we will have the main actor singing at the camera in a similar location to the restaurant so perhaps in the restrooms or just standing up in the restaurant. All the actors involved in the filming will be dressed smartly to fit the image of a restaurant in scene.

Props
  • Table/chairs (for restaurant scenario)
  • Flower/Rose to give to the girl
  • Hat
  • Suit
  • Food/Drink (restaurant scenario)
Links to Genre
To link our video to its corresponding genre we will do the common feature of r&b videos which is to have a man with a woman who he expresses his feelings too.

Goodwin
To employ Goodwin's theorem into our music video we will have a woman in the video as this is common with Ne-yo's videos and also in R&B love music videos. Also, we will attempt to make a visual to lyrical representation when our Ne-yo actor is on screen solo by relating his body language to the lyrics of the song (for example, there will be moments when Ne-yo will point at the camera as in to point at the girl and tell her he wants a future in her). Also we will attempt to get solo shots of the piano being played by one of the actors so we can have a music to visual relationship. To meet the demands of the record label, we will get our main actor to wear a trilby hat because this is a common accesory of Ne-yo that he wears in the majority of his videos.
